After hitting two more home runs Saturday night, Albert Pujols is just eight away from hitting 700 career runs.

At one point it didn't seem like Pujols would reach the historic milestone, but he has surpassed 700 runs in a game with six homers in his last eight games.

However, Pujols won't let those numbers change his decision to retire at the end of the year.

The Cardinals veteran told USA TODAY's Bob Nightingale that he plans to leave after the season, even though he is on the all-time home run list.

"I'm going to retire at 693, 696, 700, whatever," Pujols said. “I don't get caught up in numbers.

If you would have told me 22 years ago that I was so close, I would have told you that you were crazy. My career has been great."

Pujols has hit six home runs in his last eight games. He has 13 home runs and an .858 OPS on the season.

Despite the hot streak, Pujols has no regrets about his decision to announce his early retirement.
